ORDER YOUR SOD

Make a sketch of your planned lawn.  Include the measurements for length, width, and any unusual features. Mr. Turf will determine the amount of sod you’ll need from this sketch.

PREPARE YOUR SOIL

Grade and level the lot, removing all sticks, stones, and breaking up large clumps of earth. Rototill or spade the area to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.  Be sure that drainage slopes away from buildings. Then, as needed, rake in fertilizer, lime, peat, or compost to a depth of 3 to 4 inches.  (For best results, have a qualified service soil test the area to see what type of fertilizer is needed.) Water the prepared area to a depth of 6 inches to settle soil and provide a moist base for turf.

INSTALL YOUR TURF

Install the sod immediately upon delivery. (In hot weather, protect unlaid turf by placing in shade or covering with moist burlap sacking.)  Begin installation along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk.  Stagger blocks or strips as if laying bricks.  Butt edges against each other making sure that roots lie flat in soil. Avoid gaps or overlaps.  Once lawn is installed, roll the entire area with a lawn roller to improve soil contact and remove air pockets.  To ensure that turf stays smooth, avoid heavy use of your lawn for the next three weeks.  Within 30 minutes of installation, give your new lawn at least one inch of water.  Water daily until turf is firmly rooted, usually within 2 weeks.  The best time to water a new planting is in early afternoon so it will stay moist during the night.  After rooting takes place, weather conditions will dictate the amount and and frequency of watering.
